Press Release: Double Win for Denmark


Nordic Championship for Cook and Waiter Apprentices were held this year in the World Design Capital Helsinki on 20.-21.4.2012. There were five Nordic countries competing in the legendary Perho Culinary School in the centre of Helsinki. Denmark’s outstanding performance was enough to win both the cooks’ and the waiters’ competitions.

Students competing in Denmark’s cooks’ team were Kasper Kristensen and Camilla Bailey Steffensen, led by Flemming Dam Overgaard from Eucvest Esbjerg. The winning waiters’ team consisted of students Christian Neve and Kristen Eyfjord Pedersen and their leader Kristin Kajhøj Ibsen from Technical School Silkeborg.

During the two day competition, the cooks showcased their skills on planning and preparing meals of several courses. The waiter apprentice teams competed in dinner table setting, wine knowledge, cocktail making, doing carving and filleting etc. The competition culminated on Saturday when the teams served a menu they had planned and prepared to the guest judges.

Nordic Championship for Cook and Waiter Apprentices highlight Nordic culinary skills and tradition as well as boost the image of restaurant industry. Students taking part in the competition are future top chefs and hospitality professionals. Cook and Waiter apprentice teams from Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway consist of two members. Every country chooses their team members in the national championships and the maximum age limit is 23 years.

Nordic Championship for Cook and Waiter Apprentices were hosted this year by the Finnish Hospitality Association MaRa. Nordic Championship was founded in the 1980s and is held every year in one of Nordic countries. Next year the competition will take place in Denmark.

Competition venue, Helsinki Culinary School Perho, is a pioneer in promoting professional skills in Finland and well-known in Europe for its high-quality operations in vocational education. Perho educates restaurant cooks, waitresses and hotel receptionists for the hotel and restaurant industry. The teaching restaurant Perho is the first on-the-job learning placement for the students. The Perho students take on-the-job learning periods also in other Finnish and European partner companies.
